| NewsThankful for His Phi Delta Theta Experience Thanks to Jeff Reising ’77 for participating in this Q&A. Why did you join Phi Delta Theta as an undergraduate? I joined Phi Delta Theta primarily because two of my high school friends John Harbaugh ‘77 and Marty Beas ‘77 were rushed at the same time. Freddie Moore ‘74, who was also from Kokomo, put on a party in their room and invited a few girls from the dorms. We all had a very positive first experience with fraternity socializing. We enjoyed the guys there too. Ray Shreiber and H P Culp ‘77 were also positive memories from those early rush days. All three of us received bids and the rest, as they say, is history. After last year’s success with old equipment, we are looking to purchase new equipment. The cart we currently use is approaching 15 years old, and our returning driver Kyle Lorch (Top Ten Finisher) feels as though with a newer updated cart we could have even more success. His Purdue University Basketball Uniform is presently on displayin the newly renovated Mackey Arena Basketball Complex. According to Tom Schott, Dad’s uniform is the only item from the early years on display. They will be changing the display cases periodically, but for now, Dad is representing Ward “Piggy” Lambert’s first two Big Ten Championships. There were two All‑Americans on the team – Don White, who later coached basketball at Washington of St. Louis and played against Purdue, and Ray “Candy” Miller, who also was All‑American in football. Abe Masters, who later coached at Lafayette before Marion Crawley came to Lafayette and his son, Bob Masters was Mr. Basketball in 1948 and later played on Indiana University’s national NCAA Championship team, was also on the team. The uniforms had hip pads inside and both jerseys and pants were made of wool. The display is located in the northwest of the concourse at the Arena. Hope you enjoy a little bit of Purdue History! -Jim Leverenz ‘60 All News |
